Servant Leadership from the beginning

In 1931, when the doors of St Andrew’s opened, it was in fulfillment of a calling. The making of St Andrew’s into the celebrated institution that it is today has been largely due to the strong service-oriented foundation laid by the Lavers as well as dedication of the staff that have worked at the school over the years.

Turi village where the school is situated is made up of about 10 ethnic groups with varying customs and cultures. The main economic activity is small-scale farming.

The existence of the school has without a doubt elevated the community economically through formal school-run projects and individual efforts of staff members. The St Andrews’s School community has over the years helped the less fortunate members of the Turi community by supporting or running initiatives that contribute to the uplifting of its members in big and small ways. The initiatives have received support from the student body, staff members, Alumni and parents.

As a leader in education, the projects the school supports lean heavily towards enriching the academic experiences of the children from Turi village. This sometimes still involves looking into provision of basic needs. As is the case in many rural settings, the education of children is compromised or completely disrupted by lack of basic necessities like food.

Through initiatives like the Uji Project, a school feeding project started in 2024 that provides a daily cup of Uji for 2500 learners from neighbouring Turi Sulgwita and Elburgon DEB Primary Schools we have seen significantly reduced absenteeism and increased enrolment numbers in these institutions. This has strengthened our resolve to support the needs that complete the education of the children of Turi village to enable improved academic outcomes.

Below are other the external projects the school supports:

The Road to 100 Years

In 2023, as reflection on how best to mark St. Andrew’s centenary eight years ahead, the School Board approved an initiative unlike any other in the school’s 93-year history. While many have walked through Turi’s doors and carried its spirit to all corners of the world, it was agreed that one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate this legacy would be to extend the Turi experience to deserving young people who would otherwise never access it.

True to its mission of Seeking the Highest, the school has long been involved in external outreach programmes that uplift our neighbours academically and a few years ago a decision was made to bring it closer home.

The Phoenix Award - Access to Success

In 2023 the Phoenix Award was established. This is a bursary designed to go beyond offering partial scholarships on tuition. Unlike traditional bursaries that assist families who can meet part of the fee requirements, the Phoenix Award provides full financial support for a student of exceptional promise from a financially disadvantaged background, along with an additional 10% of annual fees to cover auxiliary costs. The goal is simple; to give a talented child access to a transformative education and a pathway to lifelong success.

Before launching the award, careful consideration was given to the social implications of bringing children from modest backgrounds into an environment like Turi. We consulted with institutions such as the M-PESA Foundation Academy and alumni who had received similar support in earlier years. The findings were reassuring, the experience was tough, but they felt equipped to handle life in university and beyond.

The Phoenix Benevolent Fund

In January 2026, as part of the Turi @ 95 celebrations, a decision was taken to consolidate all charitable efforts under one kitty and open up fundraising efforts beyond the Turi community to meet the varied and growing needs of the community.

The Phoenix fund supports all the above mentioned initiatives.
