Prep Boarding

Turi a unique place to attend school.

Boarding School defines are life at Turi and the necessary pastoral care follows. The children enjoy spectacular grounds and high levels of security in an up-country location, making The children in both Prep and Senior school live in age-appropriate, single-sex boarding houses that are located close to the children’s school buildings and classrooms.

The boarding houses are specifically designed for the purpose and enjoyment of excellent facilities including gardens and common rooms. Each boarding house has dedicated houseparents who are supported by a team of matrons and staff. The houseparents are always on call and available to parents by telephone and email.

Houseparents are led by a Deputy Headmaster whose primary responsibility is the pastoral care. Each Deputy is responsible for a team of staff who ensure that the pastoral systems in place allow every pupil to thrive.

Pastoral care and academic success go hand-in-hand to ensure that every child reaches their potential.

Junior Boys Boarding House

Housed in the original school buildings, the Junior Boys dormitories consist of four large dorms accommodating 54 boys from Year 2 to Year 6. The dormitories have recently been renovated to make them feel very homely.

The Houseparents, Mr and Mrs Morgan, are assisted by two very experienced matrons. Alongside the Houseparents and matrons, six of the teaching staff take on some of the duties throughout the week.

In the evenings, boys have the option of a wide variety of activities ranging from sport in the BP Hall, ICT, games on the floodlit basketball court, Bible study, as well as TV and movie nights.

Although personal mobile phones are not permitted in Junior Boys, parents are able to call in, on any of the five phones available, in the evenings. Year 6s have the privilege of being able to play with personal gadgets (PSPs, iPods, etc) over the weekend, which are stored safely away during the week.

Dorm of the week creates a healthy yet competitive environment within the dorms where the tidiest dorm, quietest dorm or most organised dorm is awarded a ‘move’ on the Behaviour Race. This is all in the hope that the dorm will eventually win at the end of the week and will be invited to a ‘party’. The privilege of watching football or cartoons as well as having a soda, packet of crisps and a small chocolate is enough to motivate any boy.

Junior Boys is a warm, safe and loving, as well as disciplined environment for young boys to grow up in. The boys really do look out for each other and enjoy living in a community.

Junior Girls Boarding House

At Junior Girls, we cater for girls ranging from Reception (age 4/5) through to Year 6 (Age 10/11). The girls are split into age-appropriate dormitories, based around the theme of ‘Stars’, as we believe all the girls we have are bright, shining stars! We are looking to encourage, inspire, support and empower the girls to learn and grow as individuals.

The Houseparents in Junior Girls are Mr and Mrs Rooney. They are helped by two matrons who are on call throughout the day and night, as well as other female members of staff.

We try to make the boarding house a home away from home, where the girls are nurtured, and feel like they have their own spaces. Initially, this is done in large dormitories, where the younger girls can build relationships and friendships with their fellow boarders. As they become more confident and independent, the girls move into smaller dormitories, where they are given greater responsibility and can show their maturity. Through roles such as Dorm Captains, the older girls are also given responsibilities, which help them to prepare for life at the top-end of the Prep School.

Dorm of the week creates a healthy yet competitive environment within the dorms where the tidiest, quietest or most organised dorm is rewarded. At the end of the week the winning dorm is invited to a ‘party’ to celebrate their good behaviour.

The aim is to keep the boarding house a fun, friendly and homely place to be, with the girls feeling safe, happy and secure, building great relationships with the other girls around them and the staff. The recent renovations have made the dormitories feel very warm and homely.

Senior Boys Boarding House

The Senior Boys Boarding House caters for up to 60 Year 7 and Year 8 boys. The children are housed in a large, two-storey building at the centre of the School, with a large lawn to the front and rear, a common room on each floor and seven dormitories housing approximately eight boys each.

There are three dormitories on the ground floor, which are occupied by Year 7 boys, with the Year 8s housed in the five dorms on the first floor. The downstairs common room is well-stocked with leisure facilities, having two table-tennis tables, a pool table, as well as seven computers which Senior Boys may use for work and leisure purposes. Upstairs, students can enjoy table-football, and there is also a DVD player and DSTV for evening entertainment. The boarding house also has a healthy supply of board games, and boys are often found playing Monopoly or Connect 4 during the evenings!

The Houseparent, Mr Benedict Otieno, comes with years of teaching and pastoral experience. He is present in the boarding house every day and enjoys an excellent rapport with the boys. Weekly meetings are held every Sunday evening, with shorter meetings during the week as and when required. Together with the rest of the Senior Boys Boarding House team, they ensure a full week of evening activities which include Bible studies, Chapel, ICT, various sports including football and dodgeball, as well as evenings where staff and students might enjoy a film or TV programme together.

Each Dorm takes turns to help with boarding house responsibilities and there is also a ‘Dorm of the Week’ when the children receive a tuck treat as a reward for receiving the most Dorm Points. Six times a year there is also a ‘Dorm of the Term’ treat, where the Dorm with the highest number of Dorm Points, plus the top ten pupils with the highest number of individual Dorm Points that term, are invited to the House Parent’s house for snacks and drinks around the fire. In addition, every Dorm Point counts towards each boy’s annual total, with a substantial prize on offer at the end of the academic year for the ten boys with the highest totals.

As well as the assistant houseparents, the boarding house team is supported by a strong pastoral team of teachers and matrons and the children always know who is on duty and when. The two matrons, Miss Yvonne and Mrs Andisi, have a wealth of experience in supporting the Senior Boys Boarding House. They live on site and are on call 24 hours a day.

Children are encouraged to have contact with home and phone calls are made and taken every evening. Children are allowed their own phones provided these are used responsibly and there are also two dorm phones, which parents can use to contact their children. The boys are also encouraged to use electronics responsibly: they are allowed to have iPods and electronic games during free time at the weekends, which are all safely stored away when not in use.

Senior Boys is a warm, caring, nurturing and happy environment where all the boys are known and recognized as individuals, and encouraged to develop their individual strengths. However, each and every boy is also an integral part of the Senior Boys team, who recognizes his collective responsibility to uphold the good reputation of the boarding house. During term time, the Senior Boys Boarding House is the boys’ home away from home, and they are encouraged to treat it as such. It is a relaxed environment where every boy can be himself and know that they are loved, valued and respected.
