The Senior Boys Boarding House caters for up to 60 Year 7 and Year 8 boys. The children are housed in a large, two-storey building at the centre of the School, with a large lawn to the front and rear, a common room on each floor and seven dormitories housing approximately eight boys each.
There are three dormitories on the ground floor, which are occupied by Year 7 boys, with the Year 8s housed in the five dorms on the first floor. The downstairs common room is well-stocked with leisure facilities, having two table-tennis tables, a pool table, as well as seven computers which Senior Boys may use for work and leisure purposes. Upstairs, students can enjoy table-football, and there is also a DVD player and DSTV for evening entertainment. The boarding house also has a healthy supply of board games, and boys are often found playing Monopoly or Connect 4 during the evenings!
The Houseparent, Mr Benedict Otieno, comes with years of teaching and pastoral experience. He is present in the boarding house every day and enjoys an excellent rapport with the boys. Weekly meetings are held every Sunday evening, with shorter meetings during the week as and when required. Together with the rest of the Senior Boys Boarding House team, they ensure a full week of evening activities which include Bible studies, Chapel, ICT, various sports including football and dodgeball, as well as evenings where staff and students might enjoy a film or TV programme together.
Each Dorm takes turns to help with boarding house responsibilities and there is also a ‘Dorm of the Week’ when the children receive a tuck treat as a reward for receiving the most Dorm Points. Six times a year there is also a ‘Dorm of the Term’ treat, where the Dorm with the highest number of Dorm Points, plus the top ten pupils with the highest number of individual Dorm Points that term, are invited to the House Parent’s house for snacks and drinks around the fire. In addition, every Dorm Point counts towards each boy’s annual total, with a substantial prize on offer at the end of the academic year for the ten boys with the highest totals.
As well as the assistant houseparents, the boarding house team is supported by a strong pastoral team of teachers and matrons and the children always know who is on duty and when. The two matrons, Miss Yvonne and Mrs Andisi, have a wealth of experience in supporting the Senior Boys Boarding House. They live on site and are on call 24 hours a day.
Children are encouraged to have contact with home and phone calls are made and taken every evening. Children are allowed their own phones provided these are used responsibly and there are also two dorm phones, which parents can use to contact their children. The boys are also encouraged to use electronics responsibly: they are allowed to have iPods and electronic games during free time at the weekends, which are all safely stored away when not in use.
Senior Boys is a warm, caring, nurturing and happy environment where all the boys are known and recognized as individuals, and encouraged to develop their individual strengths. However, each and every boy is also an integral part of the Senior Boys team, who recognizes his collective responsibility to uphold the good reputation of the boarding house. During term time, the Senior Boys Boarding House is the boys’ home away from home, and they are encouraged to treat it as such. It is a relaxed environment where every boy can be himself and know that they are loved, valued and respected.
