The Anti-Bullying Approach at Turi, Prep

What is Bullying:

Bullying is defined as repetitive behaviour by an individual or a group that is intentionally hurtful to another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can be physical or verbal or psychological, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves. It can happen face-to face or online.

The main types of bullying are:

  • Physical
  • Verbal abuse
  • Cyberbullying
  • Exclusion from social groups or spreading malicious rumours

Bullying may involve complicity that falls short of direct participation by, for instance, manipulating a third party to tease or torment someone.

At St Andrew’s Prep School, pupils are taught to recognise bullying behaviour, are encouraged to speak out, and are reminded that the school operates a zero-tolerance approach to bullying of any form.

Pupil Voice
  • Pupil opinions are valued and encouraged in matters of school development and wellbeing. Therefore, a pupil-led committee, comprising representatives from Years 5–8, meets regularly to raise concerns, suggest initiatives and promote a culture of kindness.
  • All committee members are trained annually in active and empathic listening, enabling them to act as approachable peers. This ensures every pupil has a point of contact, especially if they are hesitant to approach an adult.
  • An annual questionnaire is conducted to gather pupil feedback and guide the Anti-Bullying Coordinator’s work.
  • Additional reporting tools include classroom worry boxes and tutor sessions, accessible to all children.
Prep School Initiatives

St. Andrew’s Prep is committed to provide initiatives and tools that will raise awareness, support our pupils and encourage kindness within the school.

Buddy Bases – Our buddy bases have been placed for each Key Stage (KS1, KS2, and KS3), which are designated boxes tailored to the preferences and interests of the students. This initiative aims to foster unity among children and enhance inclusivity within our student body. As well as this, If someone is experiencing loneliness and seeks companionship, they can approach one of these boxes.

Big Brother, Big sister – This is a weekly initiative where our Y1-6 pupils are paired with a Y7-8 and have designated time on a weekly basis to check in with their ‘big brother/ big sister’. Weekly check-ins provide emotional support and build trusted relationships across age groups while also allowing our older pupils develop leadership and a sense of responsibility through regular engagement.

Anti-Bullying Week – Every year, during a week in November, our prep school pupils engage in International Anti-Bullying Week. This focuses on a specific theme each year, which is revisited in lessons, chapels and tutor times. Activities support pupils in developing empathy, resilience and respectful communication to engage the children and embed important pastoral and social skills at a young age.

How We Support and Challenge
  • All reports of bullying are taken seriously and will be investigated.
  • Pupils who have been a victim to bullying receive support from the pastoral, chaplaincy and counselling teams.
  • Pupils who have demonstrated bullying behaviour are also supported to understand and address any root causes. Consequences are also applied fairly, in proportion to the severity and nature of the incident, and often include reflective work to promote personal growth.
  • The aim is not only to stop harmful behaviour but to foster long-term change.
Cross - Curricular Links
  • Anti-bullying education is embedded in the PSHE curriculum across all Year groups.
  • Relationship and emotional literacy lessons equip pupils with the tools to recognise, respond to and report bullying.
  • Anti-bullying education is effectively integrated across the curriculum by incorporating relevant themes and activities into various subjects.
  • The School’s values of courage, integrity and compassion are regularly linked to anti-bullying messaging and expectations for pupil behaviour.

Please feel free to reach out to the school for any further information on our Anti-Bullying initiatives.
