University of Sussex Visit Turi
On Monday 23rd January, representatives from the University of Sussex visited St Andrew’s Turi. The group included Professor Richard Follett (Director of International Recruitment) and Tosin Adebisi (Senior International Officer). A pleasant surprise was that they were accompanied by one of the university’s International Student Ambassadors, Nyawira Mutahi, a St Andrew’s College alumnus who graduated in 2013.
The purpose of the visit was not only to market Sussex as a university destination but also to provide the students with an academic enrichment opportunity. In the irst session Professor Follett talked to the A Level students about the University of Sussex and the value of studies in the field of Humanities. The Yr 12 and Yr 13 students then attended two additional lectures on the USA, China and the Cold War.
The highlight of the visit was a public lecture titled ‘Obama, Trump and the world’. In his speech, Professor Follett made an enlightening and thought provoking exposition of the legacy of former President Obama and the reasons why President Trump was able to take power in the recent election. All in all, the visit by the team from Sussex University was well received by the students, who are now very much looking forward to other visits scheduled later in the term.
