Under 14 Tennis Tournament

On 17th September, the St Andrew’s Prep and Senior Schools met head to head for a momentous tennis tournament. 23 entrants from both Schools hit the freshly primed courts, rackets at the ready. Mr Bobby Ochieng, the tournament referee and coach laid down the ground rules and started the proceedings.

“The games are meant to encourage pupils (under 14 years) to test their prowess in a tournament setting. We need to expose them to more competition in order to inspire confidence and composure,” remarked Mr Ochieng,

The contestants were divided into two groups – Group A and Group B.

In group A of the girls’ event, Esther Lucas topped the games with 40 points and 4 wins. Sanchia Obi was second with 37 points and 3 wins. In the boys’ group A category, Ryan Rubyogo demonstrated incredible spirit, and earned himself a total of 52 points! Sean Mwaniki came a close second with 46 points. The man of the match however was Yambaleka Nchimbi, who won the overall boys competition with 61 points in group stages and all 7 wins.

Sara Storry came first in the group B girls with 48 points and 4 wins with Chebet Lessan coming a close second. Sara would however lose in the semi-finals to the eventual tournament winner Sanchia Obi who took home the overall girls gold medal after defeating Esther lucas 4-2, 0-4, 4-1 in a thrilling final.

There was a healthy turnout of both staff and parents who popped in to support the players.  “We enjoyed the games profusely,” said one of the visiting parents. It was a merry and rewarding day.
