Turi 9s Under 13 Boys’ Football

History weighed heavily on the Prep School boys during their preparations this term, keeping in mind that Turi has not won the Turi 9s Tournament since 2007, and knowing that there were several strong teams blocking their path to the final.

In the first game, the boys beat Greensteds 4 to 1, a strong opening performance and statement of intent from the Turi boys. The second game was a 2-0 win again over Braeburn Gitanga, with another win helping confidence to build within the squad, with all players featuring during the first two games in order to keep players fresh and allow some recovery time.

Confidence took a knock in the third group game with a 2-0 defeat against local rivals Turi Sulgwita, who were fast and strong opponents. The final group game was another 3-0 win over Aga Khan, and there followed an agonising wait to see whether we have made it to the semi-finals, which we did on goal difference over Aga Khan.

Our semi-final opponents were Restart, who had looked formidable in the group stages, winning 5 or 6-0 in most of their games. However, Turi held firm against attack after attack, and after a string of outstanding saves from Lionel Rezida, Lawrence Matua scored early in the second half, after which a superb defensive performance from the team allowed them to progress to the final, where we would play our earlier nemesis, Turi Sulgwita.

The rain was coming down heavily by now, and as the weather worsened, so the team spirit, tenacity, and refusal to be beaten, strengthened within the Turi squad. Another fine performance as a team, including more saves from Lionel, saw the full time whistle go with the score at 0-0, which meant extra time, where a golden goal would decide the destination of the trophy. It was time for long ball tactics, and Lionel delivered a long clearance, which Lawrence fired into the back of the net, to send the watching crowd wild!

I am very, very proud of all the squad, with joint players of the tournament being Lionel, for helping us not to lose it, and Lawrence, for helping us to win it! Special mentions to for the other goalscorers who were Prince Mugisha, Shanja Mvungi, Joel Alande and Finlay Foster
