St Andrew’s Athletes Impress at Up-Country Meet
Our athletes performed well in the recent Up-Country Athletics Meeting at Greensteds. The event was a good opportunity for them to test their skills and for the coaches to assess the strengths and areas that need extra attention, before the bigger events later in the season.
The Under 13 boys displayed their dominance across the board winning nine of the thirteen events, including a clean sweep of the track events. Joseph Mambi led the way, winning both the 100m and 200m events and taking the relay team home in an impressive display which saw the under 13 boys win comfortably with close to a twenty metre gap over their opposition. In the other track events Zebulan Byaruhanga (400m), Joel Alande (800m) and Yai D’Agoot (1500m) all coasted to victory. In the field events Lionel Rezida demonstrated his strength winning both the discus and shot-put events comfortably and Joshua Birungi jumped well to win the long-jump.
The Under 13 girls also performed well with Ime-Ruth Udoh winning the 100m event and many of the girls achieving close second positions. The Under 13 girls were narrowly beaten by Pembroke House in the relay, although with better baton changes they certainly could have won it.
In the other age-groups Edward Magongo and John Oganga impressed for the Under 11 boys, winning the 100m and long jump events respectively. Tracy Obitre-Gama won the Under 11 girls 1500m and Claudia Kinuthia ran well to win the Under 9 girls 200m event.
The Turi athletes have since set their sights on the Braeburn Kasarani Meeting and IAPS event at Greensteds later in the term, each having set themselves goals and working hard towards achieving them.
