Prep School Hockey Season off to a Good Start
The hockey season at St Andrew’s has started with much excitement with the pupils showing great enthusiasm at their training sessions. The first fixture of the season was against up-country rivals Pembroke House and it was fantastic to have over one hundred Turi pupils representing their school, with nine teams involved in fixtures.
The Under 13 girls were particularly impressive in the season opener with the 1st team showing plenty of heart for a hard-fought 2-2 draw, with goals from Ella Ndubai and Anuli Ene. This was after being 0-1 down at the half-time break. The Under 13 2nd team girls also had an impressive performance, grinding out a 1-0 victory, with the winning goal coming from Mary-Martha Saazi.
The Under 13 boys had three hard fought matches against Pembroke. The 1st team boys played well in the first half but were unable to capitalise on the chances they created and went into the break level at 0-0. The second half saw some great play from both teams, with the difference being Pembroke’s finishing in the D. The final score was 1-4 to Pembroke. In the 2nd team match Turi again started well and were competitive in the first half with the score at 0-0. Pembroke came out strong in the second and were able to score 5 unanswered goals. The 3rd team game was a competitive match with both teams demonstrating good skill. The St Andrew’s boys came out on top in the end, winning 3-1, with goals from Zebulun Byaruhanga (2) and Joel Alande (1).
In the Under 11 matches the St Andrew’s teams put in fighting performances but were outplayed on the day. The U11A girls lost 0-8, the U11B girls lost 1-2, the U11A boys lost 0-5 and the U11B boys lost 0-9. Despite the losses, valuable experience was gained and the teams will know what to work on going forward and will looking forward to the return fixture to show some improvement.
