Leadership at the Prep School
Building on what was started during the last academic year, leadership is a fundamental principle underpinning everything at St Andrew’s Turi. As an organisation we strive towards our vision every day, where we aim to develop confident and compassionate individuals who live and lead with integrity.
Our Leadership Principles are:
- Be proactive
- Begin with the end in mind
- Put the first things first
- Think win-win
- Seek first to understand, then to be understood
- Synergise
- Sharpen the saw
Leadership is being seen in many forms on a daily basis. There are two formal leadership sessions during the week, with a tutor time session on Tuesday and Wednesday chapel being devoted to our leadership principle of the week. Our rewards system is now aligned to the Leadership Principles, with students who show leadership in many different forms being rewarded with leadership stars.
The students are learning that leadership does not necessarily involve being in charge, or standing at the front, but can be seen in countless ways that enable everybody to make smoother progress through the journey of school life. For example, looking at the first principle, being proactive, students are learning that they can choose their attitudes, can choose to work hard and be nice to each other, and can choose to do the right thing, even when nobody is watching.
Senior boys have shown an excellent example of putting the first things first in the mornings. At the beginning of term, many boys were finding it hard to be organised at the start of the day, but by week 4 all are leaving dorms either on time or early. I am looking forward to watching our pupils continue to develop as leaders as the weeks go by, and seeing the positive impact that each individual has on our school community as a whole.
