St Andrew’s Cross-Country Championships 2018

The annual Cross-Country Championships brought the curtain down for the first half term of the academic year on 12th October. It proved once again a fitting end to the first six weeks of the term. Unlike last year, the day started with beautiful sunshine with running conditions perfect, and with 11 schools  competing, the stage was set!

The Turi teams had been training hard under the guidance of Mr Lipscomb and Mr Martin and there was an air of expectancy as the teams headed into the races. There were four age categories competing. Under 15 Boys and Girls, and Under 19 Boys and Girls competed, each team consisting of 6 runners, of whom the first four scored points for the team. The best placed runners for Team Turi were in the Under 15 Boys’ category, where Ryan Rubyogo finished 2nd and, not to be outdone, his brother Mike Ngabo was also placed 2nd in the Under 19 Boys’ category.

In the Girls’ races, Megan Spragg finished 5th in the Under 15 Girls’ category and the best placed Under 19 Girl was Eliana Draper, finishing 8th. The overall team places were as follows: Under 15 Girls: 5th; Under 15 Boys: 1st; Under 19 Girls: 3rd; Under 19 Boys: 1st. In the whole competition, these results were good enough to see Team Turi reclaim their title from last year, with a staggering win of nearly 100 points more than their nearest challenger.

What an achievement for the Turi Team!! A special thanks go to Mr Lipscomb and Mr Martin for their dedication in training the runners, the student marshalls and helpers on the day, along with Mr Andrews and Mr Ojwang’, for once again organizing a well-coordinated and successful Cross-Country Championships.
