Creating Independent Learners Who Can Reach Their Full Potential

Individual education in a close-knit, international community is what St. Andrew's Preparatory School offers. Academic standards are high and, although Turi is by no means an academic 'hothouse', our children often find that they are academically well ahead when they move on to their next school.

British Curriculum

St. Andrew's Preparatory School follows the British Curriculum. Pupils are taught in a class setting from the age of 5 in Year 1. Then subject teaching is introduced gradually, until all curriculum areas are taught by specialist subject teachers in Years 6, 7 and 8. By the end of Year 8, students are prepared for the IAPS Common Entrance Exam in which pupils are tested in seven subjects (English, Maths, Science, French, Geography, History, Religious Studies).

The majority of our students move on to St. Andrew's Senior School, while others move to senior schools overseas.

Teaching style

From an early age, children at Turi are encouraged to express their own ideas, to defend their viewpoint coherently and courteously and to work as independently as possible. General knowledge is recognised as being important and, despite the School's rural location, students are well informed about current affairs and are perfectly at home with all aspects of communication technology. Even our youngest children are confident negotiating the internet and e-mail.

Pupils are afforded the opportunity to continue their education outside of the classroom by community projects in which the school is involved and visits to the many beautiful areas of educational interest which Kenya affords. Many of the classrooms are equipped with direct internet access, enabling pupils to research specific subjects. Several of the specialist subject's rooms have data projectors.

Learning Support Department

We offer an experienced Learning Success department to assist individuals with specific difficulties, ensuring that they are given appropriate help and support.

Class Structure

The academic progress of each pupil is monitored by a class teacher in Years 2 to 5 and by a Tutor in Years 6 to 8. Parents and staff regularly discuss progress during Viso Saturdays, when all teaching staff are available for consultation.

Class sizes are limited to 15-20 pupils in order to maximize teaching time and individual attention for each pupil.
